ftevent24octTwo of the participants in a recent Fair Trade event in Lenzie had an unexpected bonus when they won hampers of Fairtrade food gifted by local Co-ops. The evening was organised by Lenzie Community Council as an opportunity for people already involved in Fair Trade to strengthen connections and for more people to get to know about the Fair Trade movement. This was an important first step towards establishing Lenzie as a Fairtrade town and to helping Scotland meet its 2012 goal of becoming one of the world’s first Fair Trade Nations.

It was truly amazing to see how much interest there is already in Fair Trade – in the local schools, churches and youth organisations. Tracy Mitchell from Just Trading Scotland and the East Dunbartonshire Fair Trade Steering Group gave an introduction to the different facets of the Fair Trade movement – from investment opportunities to trading in foodstuffs, craft items and an increasing range of fairly traded goods. Lots of samples were available on stalls, manned by Lenzie Academy pupils and other enthusiasts. The next step is the formation of a Fairtrade Steering Group and a nucleus for this was established at the meeting.  Anybody else who is keen on the Fairtrade idea and who would like to get involved – please contact via the Website.
