Christmas Lights Switch-On

2010switchon1-22Despite the high winds and rain on Friday night, the event went ahead and there was an amazingly high turnout of parents and children.  The event was moved inside to the Hall of Lenzie Old Parish Church and this made sure that the Band, the Carol Singers and Father Christmas were not blown away – Father Christmas’s beard had a hard time all the same.

When the big switch-on time came along, the pavement at Queen’s Buildings was lined with expectant children and adults who had a grandstand view of the dazzling light up.  More photos on Facebook page.

Many thanks to all those who participated and who defied the weather to come along.

Beat the Drum for Fairtrade

On 22 October 2015 Lenzie Academy will once again play host to a Lenzie Fair Trade event.  Beat the Drum for Fair Trade is an evening of African entertainment and food to remind us all exactly why we must continue to support farmers and producers in developing countries.  The evening will include a demonstration of African drumming by Gameli Tordzro from Ghana.  Gameli is the Artistic Director of Pan African Arts Scotland and will also encourage any aspiring drummers present to participate in an interactive drumming workshop.  There will be some short presentations from school pupils who have chosen to become involved in Fair Trade projects based in Africa, and the opportunity to taste snacks – both sweet and savoury – made with Fair Trade products from various African countries.  African dancers will also be there to show off their skills, but be warned – participation is mandatory!  As ever, there will be the opportunity to browse and buy from Fair Trade food and related gift stalls.  Our brand new breathable bamboo socks are bang on trend for A/W 2015!  The event will be open for stall browsing at 6.45pm on the evening, and will start promptly at 7pm, ending at 8.30pm to allow younger people to come along.  There will be an admission charge of £2 per adult and £1 per school age child to cover catering costs.

Lenzie Map

lenziemapEvery Community Council in East Dunbartonshire Council area has recently been issued with an official map of its area and you can view the Lenzie CC map on a bigger scale by clicking Lenzie CC 2015map. The boundaries of adjacent Community Councils can be found on the EDC website under ‘Maps – Planning’ and by ticking the ‘Community Council Areas’ box.

You may be surprised to find that the Lenzie area does not include any part of the new Woodilee Village. Lenzie CC has for some time been discussing this with neighbouring Waterside CC and East Dunbartonshire Council. What has been agreed is that Lenzie CC will represent residents in the area of the former Hospital, pending revision of Community Council areas by East Dunbartonshire Council before the next Community Council elections in 2017.

The agreement is based on the following alterations to the Lenzie CC map – starting at the Garngaber/Initiative Road traffic lights; the Waterside/Kirkintilloch boundary is followed north-east to its intersection with Calfmuir Road; then Calfmuir Road is followed southwards to its intersection with the current boundary shown on the Lenzie map. This alteration is consistent with access routes and school catchment areas.

new schoolWork has started during the summer holidays on the new School at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Moss Road.  The main entrance was completed in time for re-opening of Lenzie Moss Primary and work is going ahead on the foundations.

The contractors, Lendlease and East Dunbartonshire Council are keen that people in Lenzie are kept informed of progress and aim to issue a series of Newsletters to do that.

You can read the first of these Newsletters by clicking on the pdf file link  Aug 15 – New Primary School Lenzie – Newsletter Rev 4 (1).
