A unique tasting event on 16th May at Billington’s introduced new Fair Trade products to Lenzie and an opportunity to hear at first hand what it means to the Kenyan producers.

Anisia Wanja  was on hand to serve up pasta samples to customers during a whistlestop launch of pasta sauces in Scotland, from Blantyre to Brechin by way of Linlithgow and Edinburgh.  Some customers have already tried the sauces and claim that they have a specially fresh taste.  Anisia is not surprised and claims that this is due to the high quality ingredients, grown without using fertilisers and chemicals, according to organic principles.

The Bake-Off competition on Saturday 8th March was something of an experiment.  Would anyone enter?  Would anyone come? So the Lenzie Fairtrade Group was delighted (and a little relieved) to see a queue of people waiting with their Bake-Off entries.  All three categories (Nursery/Primary, Secondary and Adult) were well represented and the standard of baking was high.  The judges were Fiona McLeod MSP, Georgia Kerr from Lenzie Academy’s domestic science team and Helen Sayer from the Fairtrade Group and they were impressed by the appearance, taste and texture of the baking, not to mention the creative use of Fairtrade ingredients.  There were Fairtrade prizes for the winners in each section and certificates all for winners and runners up.  Names in the frames were:

Nursery/Primary group:         Winner, Kate Tierney;  Runner up, Aliya Brear

Secondary group:                   Winner, Naomi McConnell; Runner up, Nairn Watson

Adults:                                    Winner,  Jane Tierney; Runner up, Ellie Mackinnon

Staff at Billington’s have an extra spring in their step this week following the announcement that they have been awarded ‘Best Deli in Glasgow’ title by BBC Good Food magazine.

This award was based on customer responses, mystery shopping and judging by an expert panel.

The BBC Good Food Show will be at SECC over 18-20 October and Billington’s will have a stand among a wide array of specialist food producers.  Congratulations from Lenzie Community Council. Read more here.

Fairtrade Fortnight – support it!

Fair-TradeThis year Fairtrade Fortnight runs from Monday 25 February to Sunday 10 March and the Fairtrade Foundation is urging us all to Go Further for Fairtrade.  This is exactly what we mean to do and hope for support from Lenzie residents!  There are lots of incentives, including 20% off Fairtrade food in the local Co-op Branch.

There was lots of support for Fairtrade in Lenzie in 2012 and the  Fairtrade stall in the Coffee Lounge (now MaMa Da Vinci’s) established a regular presence. But this year it seems that  Fairtrade is happening all over Lenzie.  There will be events during the Fortnight at St Cyprians’ Childminders, the Girls’ Brigade, the Junior Boys’ Brigade, Anchor Boys, Cubs, the Lenzie Public Hall Mother and Toddler group, Lenzie Old Church, Lenzie Union Church, University of the Third Age, and St Mary’s Church in Kirkintilloch with its Christian Aid Fair on Saturday 2 March.

If you belong to one of these groups please check with them for the date and time of their event.  Otherwise, come along to Mama Da Vinci’s on Friday 8 March to stock up on Kilombero rice and Eswatini chutney, not to mention Divine Chocolate – as well as crafty gifts!

More big news is that our detailed application to gain Fairtrade Town status has been completed and submitted – watch this space!  Since posting this notice it has been announced by the Scottish Government that Scotland has achieved Fair Trade Nation status – only the second nation after Wales.
